Chapter Eight

Travis hadn’t expected the woman in the swing in front of him to become an important person in his life. Hadn’t expected that he’d love her smile, her sense of humor, and her tenderness. He loved the feel of her soft body pressed against his whenever they embraced.

Each time she swung closer, her spicy fragrance drifted toward him. Teasing him. Acting like a gentleman around her became impossible when his body behaved like a horny teenager. He wanted her.

His heart wouldn’t allow him to wait to tell her how much he cared. Had to be now. Standing in front of her, he waited for her to swing toward him. He grabbed both ropes. The swing jerked to a stop. A confused frown wrinkled her forehead. He moved closer, until her knees touched his waist, and held that position. A spark of awareness flashed in her eyes.

“Is anyone else here?” she asked.

“Uh-uh. Dane’s got them all day. No one here but us.” He grinned.

“Jason?”

“Dane’s.”

Leaning forward, he kissed her softly, gently. “Been planning this ever since I first laid eyes on you.”

She opened her knees and let him in.

His lips brushed hers and moved to her ears, her jaw, and down her neck. Each kiss was more desperate than the one before.

She pulled his face to hers and peppered him with tiny baby kisses.

“Sarah?” he whispered.

“Shhh.” She nibbled his ear and made him shudder. “Don’t say anything.”

“Let’s get you out of this swing. Hang onto me.”

She locked her ankles around his waist, her arms around his neck. He lifted her from the swing and slowly lowered her to the ground.

Travis kissed her hard, slipping his tongue inside between her lips. When she drew him deep into her mouth, he groaned and broke the kiss. Lacing his fingers with hers, he moved from the swing and leaned against the tree. He cupped her cheek in his hand and showed her a smile that lifted the corners of his sexy mouth. “I’d like to take you to bed.”

She traced his jaw with a fingertip. “I’d like that, too. Going to bed would be wonderful, but a bad idea.”

He reared back. “Sarah,” he whispered. “What do I have to do to make you stay?”

“My life is complicated. I’ve screwed up every relationship I’ve ever had. The men who once declared their love ended up hating me. Hurting me.”

“I’m not like that. Give me a chance to prove it.”

She lowered her head.

“Tell me honestly.” He framed her face in his hands, lifting her gaze. “And don’t lie to me. Do you have feelings for me?”

She nodded.

“So what’s the problem? And don’t tell me you’re too old or that I’m too young. I have two married sons and five grandchildren.”

“I don’t want to be talked about like I’m a cougar.”

He growled. “Nothing wrong with that, babe. Now kiss me.”

She brushed her lips against his.

“Baby, I know that a few weeks is too early to expect a commitment, but if you’re willing to give us a try, I’m willing to wait for as long as I have to.
